Since TheServant brought up the question of dishes I thought I would ask one of my own. I just started my Yule shopping (yes I start this early. I have a BIG family) and I was looking at getting some stuff from Pampered Chef for my S.O. I talked to one of the representatives and have done a little research and the stoneware looks like it would be bird safe but what about the stainless steel? I did a quick google search and it looks like stainless steel can also be nonstick. Does anyone know about the stainless steel cookware from pampered chef or have an idea where I can get the information? Or should I call the company directly? I never had this problem before because I inherited all of my dishes from my mother when she upgraded.

My friend just called me today after I have already found 2 awesome homes for his Goffin and CAG that he is not interested in just rehoming them anymore but that he wants to sell them aka make money. I apologize to anyone that was truly interested in them. I'm disappointed and a bit embarrassed as the 2 homes I found for his birds were good friends of mine and now I have to tell them "Just Kidding! He changed his mind and wants to sell them now!" Ugh. Again, my apologies to anyone that was actually considering adopting any of his parrots.

My friend Jerry needs to rehome all 3 of his parrots. He has asked me to take them for him but I rent a 1000 sq. ft. townhouse & do not have the space and even if I had the space I do not have the time for additional pets period atm!

He is located in Hacienda Height in S. CA zip code 91745.

He has a 3 year old male Congo African Grey named Nevermore.

All 3 birds are hand tame and friendly, although Funnelcake will need some time to warm up to you but she is a cuddle bug once she gets to know you.

If you are interested PLEASE let me know so I can give you his contact info. His email is reptilenema(at)yahoo(dot)com if you wish to contact him directly. If you would like his # or more info please pm me so I can disclose that to you.

Rehoming fee
He is asking for $300 for the CAG+his cage. $300 for the Goffin+her cage. And $100 for the GCC+his cage. If you were to take all 3 parrots he will let them+their cages go for the rehoming fee of $600.

So it's been a while! lol

I love my Blue Crowned Conure Sully. Isn't he handsome?

Sully does an awesome Umbrella cockatoo impression.<3

I have been feeding Sully a pelleted, nut, dried veggies/fruit, and seed mix mix and have been providing him with fresh fruit and veggies. He has been getting tons of exercise on his new play stand and he now weighs 173 grams! When I first got him his original owners feed him pastas, chips, cookies, you named it and he was a whooping 227.5 grams. He isn't an ideal weight of 130ish grams yet but I'm happy. He eats well, plays well, and he is just so much more mobile and can do so many more things now that he is not obese. <3 At first I was concerned about his rapid weight loss but my vet said since I am not limiting his food intake, just what kinds of food he is eating and that he is eating well and not ignoring his food... that he is not concerned at all. His previous owners also did not take him out for exercise either so the combo is why he is losing weight quickly at first.

Sully gets along with my cockatiel Pidgie, they are never left alone together but can be in the same room together, same perch ect when I am present and do not fight.

Now that a parrot is going to join our household, do I have to get rid of all the teflon and nonstick pans? I apologize for what is likely a well-covered newbie question.

There are some days, where owning a bird can feel like this: ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

It seems like your shirt is always covered in poop, and seed and pellets are spilled all over the floor, even though you just swept a few minutes ago. Everybody's having a loud day and doing their best to make your headache even worse. They've all somehow managed to destroy their cages in two seconds flat, even though you cleaned them yesterday. Someone has landed up where you can't reach them and is being stubborn about flying to you, even though you were supposed to leave five minutes ago.

You come home from work at midnight, and the whole house is quiet and asleep, and then from under the cage cover you hear a curious: "helllooooo? hello? hello? hello? You're a rascal! RASCAL! Come on! Up up up!"

This is what greets me every time I get home from work in the middle of the night. I'll potter around in the kitchen in the dim light, but one of my cockatiels, Toasty, senses that I'm there and calls out for me. It makes me smile from ear to ear. I poked my head under the cover the other night, and he was beyond excited to see me. He sprung over to me, saying, "toasty! toasty one! there's my good boy!"

Not to sound all gushy, but does anybody ever just look at or hear their birdies, and feel really, really happy?

Ok, so this may or may not sound a bit strange but I was hoping for some advice if there are any other pagans owned by birds on this forum. I have run into a problem. Summer (AKA Slightly dry season) just turned to fall (AKA endless clouds with wet and wind season) here and I recently had an ex-roommate move in with us for a short time since his wife is divorcing him. Problem? He was a psychic vampire to begin with and the emotional upheaval has made him unbearable so I need to re-ward my apartment but I can't stick the beebs outside to do it!!! I really want to smudge with sage and dragonsblood but I am almost 100% certain that it WON'T be good for my three chickens ('tiels). Has anyone else run into this problem and what do you do about it?

Hell, what do you do about any ritual stuff if you want to stay inside and not freeze your buns and other refinements off? Another friend suggested boiling the herbs down to make a spray and spraying the walls to ward them but I'm afraid to spray the walls anywhere around the bird cage too. Any advice?

Just wanted to share the results of a photoshoot with mah birdie. Her favorite activities include throwing down winks, floofin her cheeks, and recently, learning to fly! Her wings have been clipped her entire life until now- she seems a much happier bird :)

Thanks for looking :)

Recently, my boyfriend finally got around to sorting through and putting away the contents of several boxes of assorted stuff that we'd hauled around with us through a few moves. In with his stuff was a miniature dream catcher that I had given to him many years ago. At a loss for where to put it, he hung it on the knob of the bedroom door.

Kermit, my Hahn's macaw, has his cage right next to this door, so the door knob with the dream catcher gets very close to him when the door is open.

Later that night, I had to change the position of the door for some reason, and the beads dangling from the dream catcher made a very loud and sudden CLACK. Kermit began to panic in the dark bedroom, so I turned on the lights to show him that nothing was the matter. He calmed down immediately, but was still clearly terrified of the dream catcher on the door, so I hung it in a different location in the bedroom, farther away from his cage but clearly visible.

This was about a week ago. Just now, I wondered if it would be okay to put the dream catcher back on the door. I moved the dream catcher where it was hanging (usually, what Kermit most strongly disapproves of is something moving when he didn't expect it to be anything but stationary) and everything was fine. I picked it up and brought it over to the cage, and Kermit looked at me like I was kind of strange but not like he was worried by any of this. I even bounced the thing in the air so the beads danced around, and Kermit was still calm.

So I hung the dream catcher back on the door knob, and the beads made a soft clack against the door, and suddenly Kermit remembers that there's a bird-eating monster there.

Sigh. I guess we can put the dream catcher anywhere but the door knob and Kermit will be just fine with it.

I left for San Antonio on the 29th and flew back in on the 2nd. Apparently while I was gone, one of our cats discovered the top of the fridge. Kai witnessed this discovery, and has now decided that the top of the refrigerator is hers. Hers, guys. Apparently the contents on top of the fridge are hers too, namely my husband's weight gain shakes. For they are kept in a box, and boxes are fun.

He took a nap in the afternoon without latching her cage door. He woke up to what he thought was the sound of a rampant squirrel in our kitchen. Nope. Just Kai. But they're pretty much the same thing anyway.

What are these??

For whatever reason, she's terrified of paper towels. So I've stuffed one inside the front of the box to prevent this from happening again. So far so good. But damn if it doesn't make a good picture post!

(PS, I've already called her vet. He said that she should be fine since she was mostly interested in tearing open the tops of the packages and moved onto the next when she was down to the shake portion. No cause for concern.)

Opened up the small birds' seed container today and noticed it was crawling with beetles!!! Flour beetles (thanks, Internet). Thankfully I have other seed mixes on hand, so I didn't get any angry "Hey mom, you forgot the good stuff" looks. But I still have the problem of this absolutely infested container. It's airtight, so I'm fairly certain the beetles came with the seed itself (although for them to just EXPLODE in population in a day or two seems really bizarre to me--did I not notice them as larvae or what? Were they just chilling at the bottom, waiting to make their move? THERE ARE HUNDREDS). I have put the container in the freezer until I decide what to do. My questions:

1. Will putting the container in the freezer kill them all? How long should I leave it in there to make sure?
2. Do I need to bin the whole stash? Is any of it salvageable?
3. When this stash of seed is taken care of, do I still need to worry?

Thanks everyone. <3

So, I just got notified that this community's going to be in the LJ spotlight starting on 9/20 for 7 days. The mod staff is all ready to go and keep things calm, but there will be a huge influx of posters. I know you all are great at educating and keeping things sane, but just in case, remember that emailing plmod at piantala dot org will get the mods in hand really fast. Also, you may want to take the community off your friends list or set up a different filter for that time period.

Now, with that said, I have some pretty powerful motivation to come up with a FAQ. I warn you that I'm completely going to post this on rationalparrot afterwards, but for now, I need your help.

What are some absolutely newbie parrot owner questions that we should answer? So far I've come up with 'Is seed-only a good diet?' and 'Do parrots need veterinary care?' and 'Do parrots need toys?'

What else can you think of? Brainstorm away, I think this'll be a great resource for the community, and I'm committed to writing it before 9/20. I have no idea HOW I will manage it, but hey, sleep's for the weak, right?

Hi

Does anyone know anything about this, it;s been suggested Wedgwood may have had this before I got him which could explain the disinterest in flying, he seems weaker on one side than the other too

The visit to the vet went very well. Clancy and Giles were good boys.

Pics and a bit of mom-braggery under the cut

They both got their nails trimmed. Here's Clancy being a very good sport about it.

Of course, good boys need comforting afterward.

Dr. Ken is usually very strict, but both birds got 3.5 on their physicals, their feathers were in excellent condition, he complimented me on their behaviour and my husbandry, and all in all I was very reassured by the visit. The bloodwork and overall reports came back with perfect results, and my two boys are good to go for another year.

Yay!

Four years ago today, after 6 months of falling in love and working with him at the pet store I worked at, I brought home my beautiful Gilbert. I was only 16 at the time and instead of buying a car, I bought a parrot. Way better option. I wuv him to bits and pieces<3<3

Sorry for the constant stream of questions, p_l, promise I'll have some pictures or something instead soon! ;w;

Anyway, I was just wondering about my tiel Mochi's behavior--he likes to vocalize a lot and either chirps, squeaks very shrilly, or makes noises that only be described as... chortles. Birdie cackling. Lately, whenever I offer him vegetables (bok choy, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce) he nibbles a little bit and then starts cackling and walking around, ignoring the vegetables for the most part after. (He did shred a piece of lettuce I hung in his cage to pieces, though.) I dunno if it means he doesn't like it, because the next time I give it to him he'll always come eat a little bit before strutting around. (He also likes to race around the desk and table with his wings partway raised, chuckling and yelling to himself and sometimes banging his beak on stuff, which I'm told is a male territorial behavior or something?) Has anyone else had their tiels behave like that?

Today is a very special day...

Lenore's First Hatchdate!

The same picture, minus the photoshopped party hat.

The other night she was stretching and I managed to capture this.

The rest are from today. :)

So naturally the flash does this, and without flash the colors are extremely off. My camera only does this indoors, but it makes everything yellow in [non-florescent] artificial light.

Be warned, the next pictures may have weird color balance... the reddish ones are unedited, the greener ones I tried to fix in Photoshop.

Wtf are YOU looking at?

Don't give me that look.

This picture of her stretching looked REALLY awesome on my camera, but looked crappier when I uploaded it. :\

Hi.

Lenore's only been in my life for about eleven months, but she's so awesome and so full of spunk. I really love her feathered little butt.

Happy hatchdate, baby girl.

This weekend, I'll be joining the ranks of folks crazy enough to keep birds. Two maroon-bellied conures are coming home from the shelter to be spoiled absolutely rotten, and I look forward to blowing their birdy minds with activities and interesting toys. They've spent the last ten years in a 24 x 24 cage shared with two cockatiels. One plucks his feathers, the other has had past egg-binding issues and a severe scissor beak. BOY I SURE CAN PICK 'EM.

I hope to keep her beak in check through regular trimmings and possibly realignment procedures. Until then, she can't occupy herself the way her mate, who LOVES to chew and shred, can. I know I want some foot toys for her, but as they're both relatively small conures, I'm having trouble finding toys that can fit her feet that HE won't immediately chew up and destroy. Any suggestions?

Sammy Lomo

I spotted this Cragislist post about a bird found in Herndon, Virginia.

My landlord needs to have pest control out to our four unit complex. The main issues that are being addressed are OUTSIDE and UNDER the house (they may do stuff inside, just not SURE). We are on the ground floor and crawl space entry to UNDER the house is in one of our closets and I have NO IDEA how open our house is to that UNDERNEATH area ventillation wise.

What things should I be looking out for to make sure my birds are safe? I have heard that gel based treatments are supposed to be best but are they ALL safe or are there certain ingredients I should be making sure are not used? Thanks for your help!

Dante chose to set up from his cage door. I had an almond in one hand, and just rested my other on the cage door. He contemplated and contemplated and after awhile I removed myself from the cage and sat down... I later gave him another chance... and after a bit of contemplation he stepped up on my hand. He then got the whole almond and placed on top of his play top cage.

So... progress :)

I have a question though... he rubs his beak a lot.. it's looking worn; the top and the right side are noticeably worn. Is this a sign of boredom/frustration? I noticed it after being gone all day (my s.o. was in the hospital a couple days ago so I wasn't home at all that day)... other than that he's doing great :)

Sammy's Mess

Sammy had a lovely morning of shredding anything and everything she could get her beak on.

I have a 3.5 year old female cockatiel named Chippy who lives in a mansion of a cage. When I'm home, she's out of it and on my shoulder, but I work really long days and am not home for a good 11 hours at a time (4-5 days/week). Chippy doesn't show signs of being bored, and she's got a ton of toys I rotate through and she can look out the window, but I still wonder if maybe she's lonely when I'm not home. My boyfriend says  she just sits quietly on her perch and makes the puffycheeks and grinds her beak (a sure sign of a contented Chip).

I've briefly considered getting her a friend (another female cockatiel or a parakeet) but I'm not big on the idea of getting another bird at the moment. I mean, I would, if it were in Chippy's best interest. But I don't want her to be less attached to me or suffer any detrimental effects from it. And from what I've seen, she really doesn't like other birds. She tolerated a friend's older male well, but can't be bothered for the most part.

What are your ideas on this? I'm just hoping my birdy's not sad :<
