Someone online requested a little video about how we feed our boys and what type of diet they eat. We have four different species of parrots--an African Grey, an Indian Ringneck, a Quaker, and a cockatiel--and while their basic needs are quite similar, some things really are different. Nevertheless, I just wanted to highlight the basics of their diet in this video. That being said, we are NOT experts on parrot care and I am NOT an avian veterinarian, so please do not take anything I say as law... if you have any questions about anything, do further research and be sure to check with your vet! There are generalities that can be made, however. It is common knowledge that parrots need a varied diet with lots of fresh, raw vegetables and some fruits; grains and beans (none are pictured in the video, but I do like to prepare "mashes" for the boys to augment their pelleted diets, as well); some sources of protein, such as cooked chicken and/or fully hard-boiled eggs (rinsed with water prior to boiling, and served with the shell), once or twice a week; and some nuts and seeds. Fresh, clean water should always be available to them, besides. I forgot to mention this in the video, but some foods are highly toxic to parrots, such as chocolate, avocado, caffeine, and mushrooms. Always check before you feed your parrot a new food! You do not want to hurt your precious baby just because you assumed something was all right for them. They trust us and love us and it is our responsibility ... |
