Question #2:
About in the middle of my White Front Amazon Parrot's (Mr. Sid) foot/pad, there is a circular sore that is a dark-ish shade of purple. I am very concerned, because I have tried Neosporion on a regular basis, but it does not seem to have any effect. I removed my parrot's sandy-perch I got at Pet's Mart, because I was afraid this was where the trouble was coming from. I replaced the sand-perch with a manzanita perch quickly. She has not yet shown any signs of trying to stay off that particular foot, but I am afraid if the sore is not treated soon she will start staying off the foot. My quesiton is, is this serious enough to have to get to the vet, or is there a particular ointment I can use to treat the sore?
God bless
Question #3:
I have an exotic/tropical parrot, we've gotten her about 10 months ago, and she'll bite EVERYONE except my mom. We can't even sit next to my mom or the bird will attack us. Jealous. (haha) She says you have to stand there and talk to it for about 5 minutes, and she'll be friendly with you, but it doesn't work. We don't wanna take it to the vet, because that would waste money. Maybe it's because of the bird's past, because she used to has a family that didn't treat her properly. We don't know. What can I do?
Question #4:
I just got a parrot and it's shy so I want it to trust me and I herd you should give him some fruit or treats but I'm not shure what exactly I can give them plzzz help I want my parrot to get used to me and he's only 3 months old
Question #5:
My 19 year old foster son started out five years ago as a daycare client in my Family Childcare program. B has special needs. I was always concerned he was being abused by his step mother but I had no proof until about six months ago when he showed up at my house with bruises and scratches on his face and neck. I called the authorities and they wanted to put him in a group home for adults with developmental disabilities. He was terrified by that idea so I agreed to take him into my home full time. I love this boy so much and want him to be safe and happy. I treat him exactly like my own son (who is also disabled) and try to make sure he is happy. I "think" I have been successful but he will not say "I love you" to me. He will parrot back when I tell him I love him but will not say it first. When I aks him if he wants to go on family outings he will usually refuse to come.
I asked him if he was happy here and he said he is happier than he has ever been in his life. I understand that he has been hurt but he KNOWS I will never allow him to be hurt again. It is getting really difficult to keep trying and feel rejected by this young man who refuses to respond to my love and concern for him. How do I get him to trust that I won't abuse or abandon him?
His aunt came for a visit last week and he kept telling HER how much he loved her. He hadn't seen this woman in several years. Why would he be so open with his feelings to her and not me? I am the one who helped him escape the abuse by his step mom, and I have tried so hard to let him know he is a good person who deserves to be loved and treated right.
It has only been about six months since he came to live with us, but he has been in my childcare program for about five years. (He started with me when he was 14) Do I need to give it more time? Because of his challenges I think it will be several more years before he will be ready to move out to some kind of assisted living situation. How do I get him to be more involved with the family and to respond to my love and concern?
Question #6:
I just reported my Uncle to the RSPCA for keeping a dog and a parrot. I did this because years ago my Uncle severely neglected a dog, so badly that when the RSPCA found it, it had to be put down. As a result he was banned from life from having any pets.
My Uncle has had 7 dogs in the course of 2 months and the only reason he got rid of them was because he stopped liking them.
I reported him because I don't want him to do that to another animal. Me and my Uncle arn't close anyway, I haven't spoken to him in years, but he is still my Uncle.
Did I do the right thing? Or should I have just left it and hoped he would treat these animals better?
I couldn't have done anything the 1st time because it was about 8 years ago when I was 8.
Question #7:
I went to the bird store to get a quaker parrot, which I have been doing research on and looking forward to getting for quite some time. I got there and all the quakers were sold! The guy working there showed me some other birds and there were these indian ringnecks. They were handfed but have not been messed with since (maybe a little but they were pretty wild and would bite, were not happy friendly birds). They are around two years old. Well, silly me, I bought one because it bit me and I fell in love with her! LOL! I know nothing about this bird but she is scared and will need a lot of time, attention and treats to get her used to me... much less my husband and other pets. I would like to know anything and everything about this bird. I would also like tips on how to tame her. She has not bit me since at the store. She just listens to me and is very calm now. If you move quickly she will fly around her cage and scream loudly but if you move slowly you can put your hand up to the cage and she will move away a little bit won't go crazy about it. She likes to watch!
Question #8:
I don't know what type of bird it is, since it was given to me. Her name's Jazzy and I love her a lot. xD
I change her food and water every day. On the fourth day I had her, my sister took her cage into the bedroom. I putting her back into the living room when the cage accidentally toppled over and cracked, causing the top part to open. She flew out, was scared etc.
I can understand why she doesn't trust me anymore. She probably thinks I"m going to hurt her, and I practically ruined her sanctuary, her cage.
I'd like to start to gain her trust again.
See, my older sister plays with her and what not, but i do most of the taking-care of. I change her food and water, and she allows me to without pecking. I think it's a slow sign that she's slowly coming around, but I could be wrong.
Before I go into her cage, I show her my hands. I leave them by the cage for a few moments, and then I talk to her softly. I say "Good girl," and "I love you" and stuffs while I go into the cage. Then I take the containers out, change the food etc. right in front of her. I think it helps, her seeing how i change the food and what not. I dunno. I just want her to be comfy with me, and I figured if she sees me doing whatever I do, she'll learn to be a bit more at ease.
Whenever I'm by her, she'll squeak and squawk. She turns away from me or goes to the part of the cage that I'm not near. I do make sure to spend at least 30 minutes of my time next to her, so she can see me and what not.
She allows me to give her treats, but she doesn't want to come near me. Whenever I'm near her, she moves away.
Help? Am I doing the right things?
I got a new cage for her! It's filled with toys and two different perches.

our self as a family did everything as normal families do. He was left to die. He had a dying wish that I remain in the children's life,I had numerous visitation motions filed up to this last February. Do you know what this feels like to have everything you love rip out from you? The human services that are now in services ,existing our cold, calculating and political and just as bad as if the two judges they got out stating they where cold corrupt and found guilty.I feel bad for Mr. Skrepinak , he will now know how it feels to not see the children you love, you care for, you share your life with even the simple things in life as seeing your children taking them for there first library card. Even though my man"s death meant nothing to any of those social services, or yet the coldness that still exit inside them agencies, Mr. Skrepnak the embarrasment, the shame, the isolation of having a conviction on his records. Will the community treat him differently after he does finish his sentence, Will a catholic church say to him you cannot board a bus with children, or ever be a chaperon , or worst yet, say you now must get mental health counseling for the crime ,committed. Or will all those have a soft heart even I knowing whats been done to me inside human services after serving and doing ard, and still not allowed to foster or be a big brother or sister to a child after being treated inside a mental health facility. Once Mr. Skrepenak does go for these services, will he be treated differently, and worthy. My man was also a single father I remain closed to him before and after his divorce, supporting him in everything sharing my home my life my money, my car that was needed to transport his children and the Luzerne County Courthouse had no mercy on me. They played mental health system that did more damage, reputely by breaching records hippa about medical and getting services from. besides leaving him to die. Remind you I cannot even get a chaperon job inside a school district and a catholic church or youth groups. All I did was trespass but told to come down the school districts with parrots entrapment., why not others arrested with parrots down there.? However I did many services volunteering .I too had jobs that required an education was good paying. Also life expeience now from the services that still brim on corruption plus I Have a college degree, It all turned to still corruptions inside human services. Even without the two judges gone. God Bless Mr Skrepnak, whatever the outcome I wish you the best.
Question #10:
I've been taking care of my moms apartment while she has been visiting her brothers and sisters in another state for 3 weeks now. She has an African Grey parrot that I've been looking after also. Anyways, Remington gets fed parrot pellets and also a parrot trail mix of seeds, peanuts, and other parrot treats in a bowl separate from the pellets. The trail mix is not to be given as frequent as her regular pellet food. However, she hardly has been eating the pellets, and only eats the trail mix treats. How do I get her to eat her normal food of the pellets? I was only giving her the trail mix like every other day, but have given her the trail mix now everyday because she is avoiding the pellets. Also, what is the proper length of time for her to be out of the cage? I've been letting her out a few hours each night, but I leave music on for her when I'm gone. I think she has become nervous since my mom has been gone for a long time and I think she has also started to pluck her feathers. I don't know if she is grooming or plucking, can't tell. What should I do with that? She also is constantly biting her nails, and they are sharp, should I take her in for a nail trim. She is being pretty nice to me, letting me pet her and everything, and I let her sit on my lap everynow and than, but I can tell she is nervous. Any info on African Grey care will be helpful. thanks.
Question #11:
Well, I am not planning on getting rid of my parakeet :) I just got him not to long ago and he already lets me pet him and stuff. Except, he only goes on my finger if I really push at him and I hate thinking I'm hurting the poor guy. Anyway, I was wondering what is a good step up from a parakeet? I know, I just got my little guy and I tend to do a lot more with him. But, I have no "latest gadget" I need this Christmas, and I have never asked for an animal for Christmas. And yes, I know Christmas is far away, but I like to beg my parents early ;). Last, last Christmas I asked my parents for Squakers Macaw witch is a really stupid toy parrot. But I want a real bird. I hear that parakeets are a good starter bird, and honestly they really are. Then, what would be next is my main question here I need to get talking about. What is a good step up from a small parakeet? I was thinking a Cockatiel, you know the birds with the mo-hawk. They cost 50$ a lot more than a parakeet, so that would be a good Christmas price (including cage, treats, toys etc.) But, I would need a healthy one. I have found out the hard way, most pet store parakeets are not very healthy. I got lucky with my third one have now. Well, at least I hope I'm lucky and this guy dies the right way, old age.
Okay, well I am sick of typing and I bet your sick of reading so let me finish this up, and I hope you'll answer accurately, nicely, and I hope you answer it with personal experience if you can. That would be best.
I was thinking of some type of Conure also those are very pretty and there are all different types of them I am aware of. My mom had a Sun Conure but I can't remember what kind.
So Cockatiel and Sun Conure, compare them in noise, messiness, kindness, tameness, and price. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Ps. If Conure, what kind of Conure like sun? etc. I will research the types of Conures or, I might go with Cockatiel.
Thank you.
Oh lol, I mean my mom had some type of Conure, and I don't know what kind.
I did not mean "My mom has a Sun Conure and I don't know what kind" Haha.
***Edit 2*** "Compare Sun Conure and Cockatiel." I mean compare any Conure type or Conures in general. Sorry I was thinking of Sun Conures when I typed that...
Question #12:
work
Question #13:
I'm 15, and I got permission to get rats. I'm SOOO happy. However, since mom didn't sound too happy with the idea, I told her I'd pay for it myself. She said she MIGHT pay or help pay for the bedding and food depending on how much it costs.
Would it be cheaper to build my own cage? Cause I can totally do that.
Anyways, here's my list. It would be nice if you could tell me the more affordable options for food and bedding and such. I'm getting 2 female rats.
Cage - built, or bought? The space I have is 23 tall, 16 deep, and 30 wide.
Water bottle
Tupperware litterbox
Hammock (dish towel secured with safety pins is an option I've heard)
Igloo
Chew stick things
Parrot rope
Toys - could I just make these?
water dish to splash in or something
Bedding (I read shredded paper towels will work..)
Food - was thinking just normal rat blocks and then fruits and veggies every other day or so.
Yogurt drops for treats?
Then the rats themselves... Mom likes the grey dumbos, as do I, so I think I might try for those. If not I'll save some feeder rats.
As for vet bills... I'm not sure. If the rats got tumors I would just have them put to sleep. Don't have the money to neuter. How many vet visits would they need minimum?
How much would this add up to, per year or month or something?
Did I miss anything on my list? Have anything to add? Thank you SO much :)
OH OH OH and one more thing. Bedding... Would it only go in the bottom of the cage? Also, when I change it, would I have to change ALL of it, or what? Do I stick my nose in it and pull out the smelly bits? xD Kidding.
Question #14:
My parents boughts two ringneck parrots almost a year ago and I have noticed that they are really afraid of people. My parents thought that they just needed time to adjust but even now whenever someone approaches them they will either panic and move around in the cage or fly to another spot quickly when out of the cage. I dont have a doubt that they were treated horrible before my parents bought them and now my question is, how can this situation be fixed to be able to communicate better with them?
Question #15:
Wern't they supposed to be more intelligent than our "race" at the time when they died out?
So why did they die again? Just naturally slowed down birth rate or a plague or war or what? Maybe they discovered latex and thought: "Hmm...".
Is there a chance they could have survived?
Could they have interbred with "our race" or would that have been like a cow trying to get a parrot pregnant?
If they were alive today, do you think we would treat each other as different races (human and primate, black and white), would there be racism?
Or would we have just interbred so much that it would be blended into one?
I wish I knew some Neanderthals...
Oh, and one more thing, did "our race" and the Neanderthal race get on alright back then?
Or would the moment of first seing each other have been a "Twilight Zone" moment, like looking into versions of ourselves from another universe/dimension?
Oh, and let's say their race was alive today and "our race" was not, What do you think would be different with the world?
Question #16:
I feel extremely discouraged. We've had him for a couple years and he has always seemed to hate me.
He treats strangers better than me. Recently a man came over to
my house and gave me advice. He was able to hold the bird and do tons of things with him.
He said I should be more confident around the bird and not let him feel dominant over me.
That worked for a couple days. Recently my aunt, uncle, and grandmother arrived at our house
for a vacation. They can all go up to his cage and pet him without being charged at or bitten.
I just don't get it. I try to eat my breakfast and lunch next to his cage so that he isn't lonely.
I also I've him fresh food, like turkey, chicken, fruit, veggies, whatever I'm eating
That doesn't have much fat or salt in it. I've read a lot of articles about what to do to discourage
Biting, such as using a consistent but calm reprimand and shaking the perch he is on, but it seems to
make him dislike me even more. Like I said, I just feel discouraged because he seems to treat everyone else nicely.
Also, I'm not sure how old he is and I'm sorry for the bad spacing and capitization. I'm typing on a phone.
In response to the first answer:
Actually, I only started trying the reprimand and perch shaking technique a few hours ago after reading some other articles. Other than that I've only shown the bird loving gestures.
I will still read the article you posted. I'm open for any and all suggestions.

Question #18:
Hi this is Anusha from South India. Got my 2 parrots in individual cages as u people had advised me to do so.I have got some training videos from many websites such as clicker training, touch training, etc. In all those videos those parrots at least stand in a perch while going near them.here my parrot does not stay in a place only. When he is inside the cage he keeps moving and climbing on the cage and stays away from me.when i leave him out of the cage so that i could use those training steps,he hops around and goes away from me.I keep going behind him.He stays in one place only when he is cornered with all things around him.but still he does not even let me move my finger towards him.tried giving him treats.he never wants to take it from my hand.when i keep it on floor near to him, he takes it and runs back to the corner and eats it.but does not come to me again.i have been watching all videos from many websites for the past 6 days.am leaving him out of cage for around 4 hours daily.do not know what else to do.I have never seen such a scared parrot who does not stand in one place so that i can start my training.I am so worried about this.Has only one leg active.checked with doctor. It seems to be that he is lame by birth.but doctor said he is very well and active otherwise. He turns when i call him out "Rocky".He peeps if i go out of the room but still does not even let me near the cage.i am sure he is not angry. He does not try to bite me.But he is very scared and tries to bite only when i try to go near when is cornered. I do not want to train him that way. I am very disappointed that he does not trust me yet.I am longing to hold him in my hand just like you people do it with your pets in the videos. Waiting for your answers.
Question #19:
my family just got a parrot, 28 years old and apparently it can live to be 80+. i've read that they can "mate" with one human in the house. more or less, id like to know how to become close friends with my new family member, Cloe the parrot. the bird was given away by its previous owners, an old couple that had retired and planned on traveling and could no longer give the bird the attention she needs. when i saw her i simply fell in love with her. any advice ?? also, what are some good toys i should get her? we have plenty of treats for her and a VERY large cage for her to roam around, as well as the house "baby proofed" so that she can walk freely when she feels like it.
Thanks for the help! :)
Question #20:
This morning I went outside and in my backyard was a dog. She was extremely shy and looked very scared. I tried to call her over and she ran away from me. A few minutes later she returned and she started following me from a distance. I enticed her over with some pepperoni. After awhile she got used to me enough that she let me tie a rope to her collar. She did have a collar, but no tags or information. She looked fairly well fed and groomed. I borrowed a leash and some dog treats from my neighbor. We walked her around the neighborhood and asked around, but no body knew who she belonged to. After a few hours, we took her to an animal shelter. They said they'd wait 11 days for her owner to claim her, then evaluate her for adoption. Basically since we had found her, if she wasn't claimed, we had first right to adopt her. But their would only be a five minute window that they'd hold her for us. She's a really sweet dog and my sister and I have already fallen in love with her. My dad actually said that if no one claimed her, he'd let me get her. My question is, we're not exactly ready to get a dog. My sister is slightly allergic, my dad doesn't like dogs, we don't have a fence, our house is small and we have three parrots. Our major concern is the birds. Does anyone else have dogs and birds together? Before today, getting a dog wasn't even a consideration, but my dad doesn't want this dog to be euthanized. I'm confused, I really want a dog and I really love this dog, but I'm not sure if it'll be good for our family to have a dog. So, if this dog isn't claimed, and we adopt it, what can we do to keep our parrots safe? Also can you give me advice on owning a dog? I've done tons of research before, but I want to learn as much as possible. Thanks and sorry if this is long and confusing. Oh and the dog is a German Shepherd mix and she's about a year old.
I actually do know that German Shepherds need a lot of exercise. My plan was actually to get a border collie when I moved out. (I'm 15 right now). I can deal with a dog that needs mental stimualtion and exercise.
The shelter scanned her, no microchip. They scanned her multiple times in her neck, chest, and sides.
My sister is very slighty allgeric, actually, the only breed she's ever reacted to is the golden retriever.
And the dog has very short fur.
Actually, it wouldn't be that hard to get a fence. Our yard is rectangular and 3/4 of the sides are fenced. Our yard is also larger then the average suburban yard. Really the biggest concern is the birds. If we're home, they're out of their cages. Their wings are clipped. But they spend most of their time in the living room, so I guess we could keep the dog out of the living room.
We found her owners, so that's that. Thanks everyone.
