Question #1:
i am going across state line to adopt a parrot. she has toys, but could use some new ones. Can i take her into the petsmart in that area? all the pet supply stores in my area are geared towards aquatics or dogs and cats. what bird supplies they do have are for parakeets, cockatiels and other SMALL birds.
she will be on a tether.
when we go to get her will be the only chance for quite a while that i could personally see the product before it arrives at my house in a box. she is a two year old Congo African Grey, but i am unsure if she is UTD on shots or whatnot.
and YES she will be going to a vet in my area that specializes with parrots as soon as we get her home. i would wait until then to take her in, but it is a three hour drive to the nearest petsmart or petco. if it comes down to it, i will just go in before we pick her up... i just wanted to see if i have the option to take her in too!
thank you everyone for advising me to keep Baylee away from the other birds. this was a strong concern of mine even before i read your messages, but after reading i feel that it would be best for Baylee if i shopped before we went to get her.
Skylarr! - I have been told that this parrot has been in the public many times to teach children about birds. she is comfortable in the public eye, but i am still new to her. thank you for the advice on stress! i don't want her to start associating me with stress.
and Gail - thank you for catching the 'shots'! lol. i was meaning bloodwork - such as tests for illnesses. i do NOT know why i said shots.
and thank you, i intend to be a very good companion to her and provide everything she would ever need or want!
thank you everyone!
Question #2:
the new parrot AR Drone is coming out soon and i would like to no a basic answer for my question which they have not supplied in the FAQ
Question #3:
To make my situation clear; first off, I own seven birds- five of which are cockatiels. After about a year of research, I have been looking to add a Senegal parrot to my flock for a long time; thing is, I couldnt find a breeder or one for adoption close to my area. I was searching online a couple weeks ago and came across a breeder/bird store an hour away that just weened two Senegal babies.
My situation; I have three occupied cages. One for my two parakeets, one large cage that currently houses my female tiel and her three two-month-old offspring, and a smaller tiel cage that houses my male, who was plucking the babies, thus why he is seperated. I also have another good sized cage at home that is empty, and a couple more in storage, so cage space isnt a problem.
All my birds have regular vet check ups and are healthy. Two of the tiel babies are being given to my friend, and Im keeping the last one. After the two go to their new home, I am placing the father back in with the female, and putting the baby in a cage by herself (dont know if it is a male/female yet, though referring to it as female). She has been caged with other birds all her life, she hasnt developed any territorial issues, and it doesnt look like she will, though I know it may be too early to tell. Besides individually handling my birds, I let them all out of their cages for at least two hours a day, and they all socialize with each other. They have no issues with other birds when meeting them for the first time.
The breeder/bird store; I read everything on the website, read the customer reviews on Facebook, and it sounds like a pretty reliable place. The Facebook profile is full of pics, and the store is roomy, has many cages and bird supplies, plus the many different birds they have are allowed to roam free and socialize with the other birds during store hours. They have avian specialists among their staff and also have a vet visit regularly. The Senegal I may purchase from them will have been socialized with many other types of birds ranging from cockatoos and macaws to parrotlets and parakeets. It will visit a vet within 48 hours of purchase, to confirm its health before I take it home and introduce it to the rest of the flock. It's housed with its sibling at the moment. I believe the store has more cockatiels than any other species, so it would definately be used to having tiels around.
I know that was long, so thanks for reading. But I was wondering; is there a chance these two species could live together in the same cage, since both birds have been around many other species? Of course, I can house them seperately, but Im curious. I know they are about the same size, and can pretty much feed on the same diet. And yes, I know all about isolation when getting a new bird, and how they might bond to each other and not me and about all those other situations.
Question #4:
I decided that I might want to add a talking bird/parrot to my family of pets. I want a talkative bird that will be entertaining, but not a hassle. What type of bird is the least expensive (what are the different prices?), and what supplies and such would I need for a bird?
Question #5:
Every time I give them straw or twigs to use for their nest. their afraid of it. And they mostly attack it or push it off their cage.
Question #6:
I am intrested in parrots (macaws), and have been for a while. I think they are amazing, and would be a wonderful addition to my house but not for no $400 plus... but the $20 vet bills, i am capable of doing plus more (like supplying a comfortable place to live)... I have been looking up facts about them, and even tho most sites have been trying to explain that parrots are not good pets because they might be mean, or might not talk, or people get tired of them when they grow old and abuse them, or might not do commands... But i dont care, i feel like i could do this. I have a bunch more years to grow old with him :) i would never get rid of him. i want this more than anything.
Thank you!!
p.s i live in Virginia...
i know it sounds bad, but is there anyway to get 1 cheap or free?
Question #7:
I'm 13 and I've been dying to get a pet for months now. I've done some research on different types of parrots, and I really like Lutino Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and Blue Parakeets. I've never had a pet bird, but I've had a lot of pets. I'm looking for a bird that's colorful, and not too expensive, but I know buying a cage, toys, and other supplies is going to add up to a lot. I'd like a bird that I can take out of its cage and hold, and one I could teach tricks and hopefully to talk. I'll have time to play with it every day, but not during the day because of school. A friend told me birds stink, and was wondering if I clean the cage weekly if the smell will still be a problem. I'd appreciate an answer and whatever advice anyone can give me.
Question #8:
Can chinchillas eat Cheesie Chewz that I got from wal-mart? My mom picked them out, and I thought 'Hey, maybe Mouse & Charlie will like this.' But when i got home, I looked at the package, and it just says for rats, gerbils, hamsters & mice... is it safe for Chinchilla? It's made out of real cheese.. I gave it to them & they seem to absolutely love them! (I took it away, just iin case.) Please, answer this!! :s
Oh, I also got a perch for them, but it's for parrots, (The pet stores were closed at 7, and of course my dad had to look at stuff at home depot.. until like 7:15.) And walk-mart didn't have much 'exotic pet supplies'. Oh, and what about salt wheels? My mom picked it out... but I don't think they can have salt.. so yea. I just put it back and than we decided on cheesie chewz.
Thanks! :)
Question #9:
I currently have a fluval 305 canister filter for my 55 gallon parrot fish (cichlid) tank. It works well, but I find myself waiting longer than I should to do filter changes, because I don't like trying to restart the filter. It's supposed to self-prime, but it doesn't. I end up making trips back and forth from the kitchen emptying the thing out and trying to get it started again. I've also had it leak on me once, and I did nothing wrong. In fact, it leaks on me about 1/3 of the time. I want to make a change, and I have heard Eheim is a GREAT brand. I am used to filling filter bags, and using sponges and baskets, so that's no big deal. In fact I think buying that stuff in bulk and putting it together is cheaper than cartridges, isn't it?
Drs. Foster and Smith.com is having a good sale on filters right now, so I will likely buy from there.

Which should I buy? What works well for you and why?
Thank you!!
Question #10:
Okay, I made her a romantic dinner. We have some wine and a few drinks with dinner and after dinner. She likes wine, lime flavored beer Bud Lime. She likes a shot of Baileys in her coffee. Supplies; Budweiser Lime, Portuguese Matuse Rose wine, Baileys, Parrot Bay Coconut flavored rum. I will put some of the rum in some ice and have her drink the rum with the ice in it.
She's staying over so next it's shower time. Why take separate showers when we can wash each other. Very sexy.
Then I will give her a massage. Light candles. I have some unscented white candles and scented strawberry and raspberry scented candles. I will use some oil, either massage oil or baby oil when I give her a massage. Music will be Indian sitar, soft jazz, classical, Spanish flamenco guitar instrumental. She likes Eric Clapton so I will play her some blues.
How does the date sound so far?
She's coming over tomorrow night after work. I want the night to be perfect.
I haven't done any shopping yet. I have a list of items to get.
Comments appreciated.
Question #11:
I am just keeping my fingers crossed. She has to work this weekend and has to ask for some time off. I am trying to think of what to do. We have been dating for a month and I asked to stay over night with me this weekend. If that works out I might jump a move and ask her to move in with me and we can live together. So, dude, this weekend is critical.
A) Romantic dinner. I am planning pasta. Spaghetti or shells. Pasta sauce will be a mix of Ragu, Classico, some crushed tomatoes and fresh sliced tomatoes. Meats will be a combo or meatballs and sausage. Garden salad. French or Italian bread. Beer Budweiser Lime (she likes that) and Sam Adams for me. Wine Portuguese Matuse Rose. Rum Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay Coconut flavored. Coke a Cola for the rum or we can do a few rum shots. Ice for the drinks and an ice game I will blindfold her later like in the movie "9 and a half weeks."
B) Shower supplies. She will pack light. I need to find out what kind of shampoo she likes. She colors her hair so I think there is a Paul Mitchell line of shampoo for that. Shower Gel I'll pick up something fruity at Bath and Body for her. I have my body trimmer and scissors in case she needs a little personal body grooming. That is optional of course.
Okay let's see how people react to that . . .and I will proceed with Part C
Thanks Sword Lady- I know you have mentioned your name on posts in the past. Just being lazy. I do value your opinion and lady's opinions to see where the boundaries are. So if a month seems too soon to ask her to move in then I will wait. You are right. We need several romantic weekends to make the next move to moving in. So cooking for her is good. Great, that I can do.
Question #12:
Who imagined that in 2009, the world's governments would be declaring a new War on Pirates? As you read this, the British Royal Navy - backed by the ships of more than two dozen nations, from the US to China - is sailing into Somalian waters to take on men we still picture as parrot-on-the-shoulder pantomime villains. They will soon be fighting Somalian ships and even chasing the pirates onto land, into one of the most broken countries on earth. But behind the arrr-me-hearties oddness of this tale, there is an untold scandal. The people our governments are labeling as "one of the great menace of our times" have an extraordinary story to tell -- and some justice on their side.
Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the "golden age of piracy" - from 1650 to 1730 - the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage thief that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda-heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: pirates were often rescued from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we can't? In his book Villains of All nations, the historian Marcus Rediker pores through the evidence to find out. If you became a merchant or navy sailor then - plucked from the docks of London's East End, young and hungry - you ended up in a floating wooden Hell. You worked all hours on a cramped, half-starved ship, and if you slacked off for a second, the all-powerful captain would whip you with the Cat O' Nine Tails. If you slacked consistently, you could be thrown overboard. And at the end of months or years of this, you were often cheated of your wages.
Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied against their tyrannical captains - and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls "one of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the eighteenth century." They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed "quite clearly - and subversively - that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal navy." This is why they were popular, despite being unproductive thieves.
The words of one pirate from that lost age - a young British man called William Scott - should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: "What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirating to live." In 1991, the government of Somalia - in the Horn of Africa - collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.
Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: "Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury - you name it." Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to "dispose" of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: "Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention."
At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish-stocks by over-exploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea-life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia's unprotected seas. The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."
This is the context in which the men we are calling "pirates" have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a 'tax' on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia - and it's not hard to see why. In

Grandfather: Her Grandfather went all out and bought her making kits, tie dying kits, you name it. He got her like 10 boxes and it had 3 per box.
Grandfather: He gave her plenty of gift cards, money and a wallet. He surprised her with clothing and blankets too.
Aunt: Her Aunt gave her a makeup kit. Lip Liner, Eye Liner, Eye Shadow, Cover Up, Lip Stick, Lip Gloss, Blush, you name it! It had different colors too...

Here is her birthday list of things we already planned out, Her family calls in saying what they are going to get her, we give them money to buy it. They usually buy expensive things. Here is the list.
The Grandmothers (4 because my parents are divorced and my husbands parents are divorced) are going to give her a Summer Camp Application to Horse Back Riding Camp.
The Grandfathers (4) are going to give her a new pair of converse, a new pair of crocs, a new pair of uggs and some clothing for her. A new wardrobe.
The Aunts (6) are going to give her a DSI. She got a nintendo from them last year, with like 25 games and she is going to get a DSI and 10 new games. She will have like 60 games now!
The Uncles (6) are going to give her a new bike. Last year they split into 3 uncles per gift. One gift was a surf board, another was a dirt bike. Everyone in our family has ATV's, dirtbikes and surfboards, so... They also are giving her fun things for the beach, since we are going to Hawaii this summer from June 20th to August 10th. Her Horse Back Riding Camp is June 10th to June 15th and August 10th to August 15th.

Her siblings requested some of those animals and we raise them together. We also have small animals like frogs and hermit crabs. We run a family farm so we have to have all of the barn animals and her siblings requested small animals and cats. We are getting a parrot/finch/dove for our farm for a Valentines Day present. She always wanted a dog. Last week I found a cute, small puppy that was 1 week and she is ready on the day before her birthday. We adopted it 2 days ago. That is her surprise. We are also throwing a surprise party for family and another for friends :)
Dad: Her dad is giving her a makeover to her room. He is painting her room and getting new furniture. He is also giving her a new television in her room with tivo and cable and a dvd player.
We have family friends who are sending her little computer games, things like that. She is also recieving a expensive piggy bank...
PLEASE DONT CALL HER SPOILED, WE DO THIS TO EVERYONE. EVERYONE LOVES HER AND WE LOVE THEM. SHE IS LIVING THE LIFE.
Question #18:
You heard Obama last night he is still pro-legal immigration, Republicans support the same continuation of legal immigration while millions of several generational Americans don't have any prosperity.
The media "owned by the elites" has spoon feed many of you into parroting how legal immigration is OK when in-fact it is NOT.
The number of legal citizenship granted by the Federal govt since 1985 is closely related to the true number of several generational Americans denied job opportunities.

Obviously i could remove some of the levels and put in some branches/ vines/leaves. i'm going to buy some sugar gliders, but i don't really want to pay the "quoted" 165 pounds for a relatively small 3/2/2 ft vivarium. plus the sides are made from solid wood so the gliders won't be able to climb up it! this cage seems like a really good price and the size is incredible for such a small animal. will they be okay on the wire bottom? what substrate should i use? something like cat litter in the bottom tray? and also is this a good idea for them to snuggle in?

please only answer if you own/ have owned sugar gliders or if you have experience for caring for them. thanks x
Question #20:
Hello... I need some help/advice here. I have had birds in the past from small parrots to lovebirds, so I am not totally new to this. There was a local pet store that I stopped several times to buy dog supplies. Every time I went in there was a male canary that would sing his little heart out, beautiful song. After several times seeing him... I thought, yup I'm going to get him.
So I did. It was almost a year ago. Once I got him home it took several days for him to adjust but then he sang and sang and sang. Then last April... one morning there was no more singing. Every once in a while he will make some peeps BUT not even close to his beautiful song.
He is in a huge cage, lots of room to fly, he gets a high quality canary seed mix, he gets a honey treat canary mix and when he started molting I started giving him a molting/oily seed mix as well. He gets millet, he has a bath, gets distilled water, is in a draft free area, where he can interact with people, has a cuttle bone and a swing.
I understand that they stop singing when they molt but he molted 8 months ago. For the life of me I cannot figure out why he will not sing. He acts and appears to be very health.
Before you say it, I know several parrot breeders and have experience myself that taking birds to a vet does nothing but expose them to avian diseases and gives you huge bills for a vet doing a whole lot of nothing.
So could someone please share some advice with me here, what has worked for you? Why in the world would he not sing for this long?
I would greatly appreciate any helpful advice!
As always... 10 points for best answer!
Thanks... but no, nothing has changed. And yes there is lots of natural light in the room, especially in the morning. He gets way more attention here then he did at the pet store!
