Question: im building a cichlid pond? any ideas? @DAN.M?

( Back )

Answer #1:

also add metriaclima , it will be great. all the best :)

Answer #2:

FYI if you put an Alligator Gar in there you wouldn't have any of the other fish for much longer. Big fish eat small fish, and an Alligator Gar is a very big fish!

And Arowanas can be bullied by larger Cichlids, so be wary with that too. Some of those Cichlids can be particularly territorial!

What size is this pond? In order for the fish to get away from land predators a part should be at least 3-4ft deep. And as there are no natives you'll need to be responsible to ensure that if it over flows those fish can't get out into the wild and pass on diseases/parasites or even become an invasive species!

Answer #3:

This is a very bad idea and could result in huge fines and long jail time for those you involve in this project that would introduce more alien invasive fish into Sri Lanka's already compromised ecological system. Did you read the link to the Sinhalese newspaper when you posed this question before only slightly less specific, and got my answer which you didn't like, apparently? I think it's more important to keep you out of incarceration than to garner your vote on Best Answer.

Many species of fish native to Madagascar, another island bordering the Indian Ocean have been already lost due to the introduction of non-native fish. Laws prohibiting precisely what you want are being considered in Sri Lanka, but I'm sure existing laws could be interpreted to apply to this kind of situation and the punishments might see inappropriate or extreme. Still you are proposing something that would forever change the environment. Red Texas and parrot fish are hybrids that could result in who knows what kind of mutant fish. Arowanas and alligator gars could affect the aquaculture industry, affecting both the economy and also destroying the main source of protein for many low income people.
