Question: All macaw requirements?

( Back )

Answer #1:

There are 6 genera of macaws and 17 species but only about 6 species are commonly found in the pet trade and can range in price from $6,500 - $12,000 USD. Most macaws cost far less but still demand a hefty price of anywhere from $800 - $1,800 depending on species.

Answer #2:

Add another thousand dollars and you are probably getting closer.
Depending on your location, you could spend anywhere between $1200 - $1700 just for the bird (this is the pricing for a normal macaw, hybrids can be more expensive). That is unless you are able to find an adult in need of a new home.
Another $700 at least for the cage, since he will be spending a lot of time in that cage you will want to provide him with the biggest cage you can afford. If you can find a previously used cage you could save some money on this expense.
Perhaps $300 in starter toys and perches, dishes, bag of pellet, treats, and cook-n-serve food.
Now for the vet check, expect to spend $120- $150.

Start up costs are staggering, but birds are worth every penny.

I've only met one Catalina Macaw, and much to the amusement of his owner, he kept unbuttoning my shirt in public.

Best of luck.
