Question: Scientifically speaking, what is the difference between a parrot and a parakeet?

( Back )

Answer #1:

Well parakeets are considered small parrots and very smart and intelligent like bigger parrots. And they can talk like macaws and other parrots.

Answer #2:

size

Answer #3:

None, parakeets are in the parrots family, the most common identifying trait is their feet. All parrots have four toes, two toes in front, and two toes in back. Of course there always exceptions any rule, but if look at the feet of finches, canaries, chickens and our local wild birds, you will notice that they have three toes in front and one in back.

Hope this helped.

Answer #4:

None. Both are common language terms. Scientifically speaking, they're all psittaciformes (or psittacines).

In general, a parakeet is a medium or smaller parrot with a slender body and long tail. A similar distinction can be made between lories and lorikeets (which are all parrots). But this is English - it's not consistent. Many species are called both "parrots" and "parakeets", lineolated parakeets have short tails, and usage varies by region (e.g., Americans tend to use "parakeet" to refer specifically to budgies, which are one type of parakeet).

Answer #5:

Bruce is right.
and you will get confusing answers to your question because of the wrong terminology people use to describe the budgerigar or budgie. Parakeet is a loosely adopted and wrongly used name for the budgerigar in the USA. So people will answer about the differences between the budgerigar and parrots as they have always known their budgies as parakeets. Parakeet is the name of a whole family of small parrots not THE NAME for a budgie.
So that means you are asking what is the difference between small parrots and a parrot. The answer is NONE.....they are all parrots.
Rephrasing your question to what is the difference between budgerigars and parrots will get you different answers again.
People really need to start calling their birds by their correct names. Budgerigar not parakeet being the first one.
